Kitchen of the Week: A Jewel Box Kitchen in the English Countryside
Located in a once-derelict country cottage in the village of Sadberge in County Durham, this petite kitchen by English cabinetmaker company deVOL functions as a jewel box cooking space for an avid collector of quirky objects. “To display his objets, the owner needed plenty of open shelving, glass-fronted cupboards, and a dramatic backdrop,” according to deVOL. “This decision to go for dark colors in a small room is a brave one, but it worked so well and gave the room grandeur and a real sense of presence.”

Above: In keeping with the rustic history of the cottage, the owner spec’d Floors of Stone handmade terra cotta tiles for the kitchen flooring.
Above: The kitchen countertops are hardwearing Silestone in the Helix finish, which mimics the look of natural marble with its white base and gray veining. The deVOL Real Shaker cabinets are painted in Bakehouse Green, and the glass-fronted wooden cabinet is vintage.
